What a hybrid denture is
“Hybrid” because it sits between a denture and a bridge. It looks like a denture, with a full row of teeth set in pink gum-coloured material, but it is fixed to implants like a bridge. Because it is held by implants rather than suction, it doesn’t need to cover the roof of your mouth, which makes food taste and feel more normal and helps people who gag with an upper denture.
It suits people who have no teeth in a jaw, or whose remaining teeth can’t be saved, and who want teeth that stay in.

How a hybrid denture is made
- Assessment and CBCT scan. We check bone, bite and how much lip support you need, and agree what you want your smile to look like.
- Design first. As a prosthodontist, Dr. Adish plans the position of the teeth before the implants, so the bridge can be cleaned underneath and the screws come out where they won’t show.
- Implant surgery. Remaining teeth that can’t be kept are removed and four to six implants are placed under local anaesthetic.
- Temporary fixed teeth. If the implants are stable, a temporary bridge is attached within a few days. You keep to soft food while the bone heals.
- Final bridge. After three to six months we take precise impressions, try the teeth in so you can see and hear them, and then fit the final hybrid denture.
Cleaning and maintenance
A hybrid denture stays in, so you clean it in your mouth, twice a day:
- brush the teeth and the gum line with a soft brush
- clean underneath with a water flosser and super-floss or interdental brushes. This is the step that protects the implants
- don’t soak, scrub or remove it yourself; it isn’t designed to come out
We see you every six months. About once a year we unscrew the bridge, clean it and the implants thoroughly, check the screws and refit it. Small repairs, such as a chipped tooth or a loose screw, are usually straightforward.
Risks and things to weigh up
- More surgery than an overdenture, with more swelling and a longer first week.
- Cleaning takes effort. Food can collect under the bridge, and gum inflammation around implants is the main long-term risk.
- Wear and repairs are part of owning one, especially with acrylic teeth.
- Speech can feel different for the first couple of weeks.

Questions patients ask us
Are hybrid dentures removable?
Not by you. A hybrid denture is screwed onto the implants. We unscrew it at review visits to clean underneath and check the implants, then screw it back. If you want something you can remove yourself, an implant overdenture is the alternative.
Hybrid denture vs overdenture: which is better?
Neither is better for everyone. A hybrid denture feels more like natural teeth and nothing moves, but it needs more implants, costs more and takes more effort to clean. An overdenture needs two to four implants, comes out for cleaning and costs less. Your bone, budget and how easily you can clean are what decide it.
Is a hybrid denture the same as All-on-4?
All-on-4 describes how the implants are placed: four implants, with the back two angled. A hybrid denture describes the teeth on top. Many All-on-4 cases are finished with a hybrid denture, so the terms overlap.
What is a hybrid denture with a titanium bar?
The bar is a precisely milled metal frame inside the denture that connects all the implants. It makes the bridge rigid, so biting forces are shared across every implant, and it reduces the chance of the acrylic cracking.
Can I get fixed dentures without implants?
A full denture can't be fixed in place without implants. If some of your own teeth are healthy, a fixed bridge on those teeth may be possible, or a cast partial denture that clips onto them. Otherwise, a conventional denture is the non-surgical option.
How long do hybrid dentures last?
The implants can last for decades. The acrylic teeth wear and often need replacing or refurbishing after about five to ten years, depending on your bite. Zirconia bridges resist wear better but can chip and cost more to repair.
What does a hybrid denture cost?
It is usually quoted per jaw and depends on the number of implants, bone grafting, and the material of the bridge. We give a written estimate covering the scan, surgery, temporary teeth, final bridge and first review.
