What goes into the fee
| Factor | Why it changes the cost |
|---|---|
| Solid (monolithic) or layered zirconia | Layered crowns have porcelain built up by hand for better looks on front teeth, which takes more lab time |
| The lab and material grade | High-translucency zirconia and premium labs cost more |
| Custom shading | Matching a single front crown to its neighbours can need photos and a characterised finish |
| Core build-up or post | Needed when a lot of tooth is missing, often after a root canal |
| Front or back tooth | Front crowns usually need more aesthetic work |
| Several crowns together | Planned and quoted together |
What a fair quote should include
- The material, and whether it’s solid or layered
- Shaping the tooth, the scan or impressions, and the temporary crown
- The core build-up or post, if needed
- Fitting, bite adjustment and a review
- What happens if it chips or doesn’t fit
Ask for it to be itemised. A low headline price that leaves out the build-up or temporary crown isn’t comparable with one that includes them.
Is zirconia the right choice for your tooth?
Solid zirconia is the strongest crown and suits molars, people who grind, and bridges. On front teeth, layered zirconia or E-max often looks more natural. In a 2026 review of more than 11,500 crowns, zirconia, E-max-type and metal-ceramic crowns all had five-year survival of about 97% or higher, so the decision is about the tooth and appearance more than durability. See zirconia vs ceramic crowns.
At Petal Smiles
Crowns are planned by prosthodontist Dr. Adish Chaudhary, whose specialty includes crown and bridge work. He recommends a material for each tooth, and you get a written, itemised estimate before treatment starts. See dental crowns.
Questions patients ask us
Why do zirconia crown prices vary so much?
Because of the material grade, whether it's solid or layered with porcelain, the lab that makes it, how much custom shading is done, and whether the build-up, temporary crown and follow-up are included. Two quotes for "a zirconia crown" can be for quite different crowns.
Is zirconia more expensive than metal-ceramic?
Usually yes. It has no metal, doesn't show a grey line at the gum, and solid zirconia is very strong.
Is zirconia more expensive than E-max?
They're often similar. The choice between them should depend on the tooth, not price: zirconia for strength on back teeth, E-max for translucency on front teeth.
Does a zirconia crown after root canal cost more?
The crown itself costs the same. A root-treated tooth often needs a core build-up, and sometimes a post, which are added to the quote.
Does insurance cover crowns?
Most Indian health policies don't cover routine crowns. Some cover treatment after an accident. Ask us for an itemised bill if you want to claim.
