When aligners are the better choice
- Your case is mild to moderate: crowding, gaps, relapse after old braces or many bite problems.
- Appearance matters at work, at college or for a wedding.
- You play contact sports or a wind instrument.
- You’d find it hard to keep braces clean, or have had gum problems.
- You’ll reliably wear them 20 to 22 hours a day.
When braces are the better choice
- Severe crowding, large rotations, or teeth that need pulling down into place, movements that research shows aligners control less reliably.
- Big bite corrections, or treatment combined with jaw surgery.
- A teenager who is likely to leave aligners in the case.
- You want the lowest cost option.
Sometimes the answer is both: braces for the hard part, aligners to finish.
Ceramic braces or aligners?
If you’d like discreet treatment but your case is complex, ceramic braces give the full control of braces with tooth-coloured brackets. If your case suits aligners, they’re less visible still and come out for meals and photographs.
How to decide
The honest answer comes from an orthodontic assessment. Our specialist orthodontist examines your teeth and bite, takes X-rays and a scan, and tells you which options will work, how long each would take and what each costs, in writing. Questions patients ask us
Is Invisalign better than braces?
Not better for everyone. Aligners are more discreet and easier to live with; braces are more predictable for complex cases and don't depend on you wearing them. For mild to moderate cases, both can give an excellent result.
Which is faster, Invisalign or braces?
For simple cases, aligners can be as quick or quicker. For complex bites, braces are often faster. In both, the biggest factor is how much the teeth need to move.
Are ceramic braces better than clear aligners?
Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured, so less visible than metal, and work all the time like metal braces. Aligners are less visible still and removable. Ceramic braces can suit complex cases where you'd like something less noticeable than metal.
Is Invisalign more painful than braces?
Most people find aligners more comfortable. Both cause pressure for a few days after each change, but aligners have no brackets or wires to rub the cheeks.
Which is cheaper?
Metal braces usually cost the least, then ceramic braces, then aligners. Your estimate shows each option side by side.
